Hollywood Undead Live Review

Hollywood Undead played the Kellogg Arena on Friday night sharing the stage with New Medicine, Stone Sour, and Avenged Sevenfold. This California rap-rock outfit brings the noise and then some with their in your face lyrics and crushing beats. Their live show is a charismatic carnival of energy and the band members each wear crazy tripped out looking masks. The masks were donned for the first three songs and were taken off for the remainder of the set. The zany antics of the guys on stage got the crowd revved up and everywhere that you looked you could see fans singing along and rocking to the beat. The drummer was showing some Detroit love by wearing a Defend Detroit shirt. Defend Detroit is a local clothing company that sells their wares in a number of different locations around the Metro-Detroit area.

Hollywood Undead's debut album Swan Songs came out in 2008 and reached #22 on the Billboard 200 in the first week of its release. They are currently working on their follow-up album American Tragedy which is due to come out soon. They have released a single from the new album called "Hear Me Now" which is currently in rotation on 89X. The guys that make up this wild fusion of sound are Danny, Funny Man and Johnny 3 Tears on vocals, Charlie Scene on lead guitar and vocals, J-Dog works it with rhythm guitar, keyboards, synths, vocals and bass, and Da Kurlzz hits hard on the drums.

Uproar Festival Review

Uproar Festival Review

This summer I've been to so many amazing concerts, but I've found myself traveling great distances because some of the best tours are not coming to Detroit. Two in particular were Ozzfest and Uproar. I don't get it, Detroit loves rock and metal! The Mayhem festival sold out here and that's the same genre as these other ones. Why are we being skipped and why do I have to keep putting so many miles on my car?!
The drive to Columbus, Ohio for the Uproar Tour was worth it based on Avenged Sevenfold alone. The fact that so many other great bands played too was an added bonus. The line-up for the festival included; New MedicineHail The Villain, and Airbourne who played the second stage or rather the first venue of the day; the LC Pavilion. This festival ended up being in two separate venues due to ticket sales being higher then expected. The Nationwide Arena was a hop skip and a jump from the LC Pavillion and a where the heck are my tickets that are supposed to be at will call? They were not at the first venue when we arrived, which would of been the logical place for them to be.They were at the Nationwide Arena, after running back and forth in the heat and getting into the venues I was able to enjoy an amazing day of music. In the Nationwide Arena on the Main Stage the bands that played lit the arena on fire. HalestormStone SourAvenged Sevenfold (they literally had flames reaching towards the sky with their amazing pyrotechnics), and Disturbed
My favorite performances at the first venue were Hail The Villain and Airbourne. Hail The Villain is an up and coming alternative metal band from Canada. You may have heard their song "Take Back The Fear," played on the radio. These boys are full of energy and put on a great live show. Airbourne are those wild Aussie rockers and their singer has a penchant for climbing things. During the show he succumbed to this pastime by climbing a wall next to the stage. He then walked balance beam style on a ledge before finally climbing down and running around some more.
For the Main Stage my favorites were Stone Sour and Avenged Sevenfold, both of these bands absolutely blew me away. Disturbed was great, but you'll have to excuse my disposition due to the fact that Avenged Sevenfold is my favorite band and I think they stole the show. (They did, it's true!) Corey Taylor of Stone Sour had his heart and energy at all systems go and blazed the stage with rock god status. He also let everyone know that their new album Audio Secrecy will be coming out on September 7th.
When it came time for Avenged to come onstage, I got chills. This is my eighth time seeing them and my first without 'The Rev'. There was a sadness in the air and you could catch glimpses of it in their eyes. Their performance and the fact that they are moving forward as a band is done out of love and respect for Jimmy. Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater humbly plays the drums on this tour, he was one of 'The Rev's' all time favorite drummers.
Their stage setup was the biggest I've seen yet. Towering gates and brick pillars were set up as the entrance to a dark and gothic graveyard. The beginning of their set entered with full force dramatics. As we looked up above in the rafters there was a man standing there with a rope... He glances downward. Slowly and methodically he winds the rope around his neck. As the opening chords of "Nightmare" are struck, he jumps. (Don't worry this was all staged). This began our wild dark ride through Avenged Sevenfold's performance. They played a lot of songs off of Nightmare and their self-titled album Avenged Sevenfold. They also played "Beast and the Harlot" from City of Evil. The blood, sweat, tears, and dedication that these boys brought to life was felt by all and crushed the arena. The blazing pyrotechnics got our hearts pounding along with their 'Synyster' brand of metal. After their set I was energized and in awe of how this band has come so far and never fails to put on an amazing show.
RIP Rev we miss you!

Avenged Sevenfold: 'Nightmare' Album Review

When Avenged Sevenfold lost their drummer Jimmy Sullivan (The Rev) in December of last year they lost a friend, a brother, and an integral part of their band and family. At first the shock of losing The Rev put everyone at a stand still, how could they go on after his passing away? Then they realized that Jimmy would never want them to stop on his behalf and out of love and respect for him they carried on. What transpired was the creation a heartbreaking masterpiece with raw emotion and dark shadows laced throughout and it is absolutely spellbinding.
“It’s about how we were feeling at the time and are still feeling,” Shadows says. “When it first happens it’s much more intense. I realize now that we’re going to have to live with it and it’s never going to go away. The record is a lot different than if we hadn’t opened ourselves up right when it happened. We were more vulnerable and willing to put it out on the line.”
The Rev had played an integral role in writing the album and just days before he died, he'd completed the song "Fiction" that now seemed to have foretold his own death and assured his friends in no uncertain terms that they had to carry on. “I know you’ll find your own way, when I’m not with you tonight,” Sullivan wrote.
It was “Fiction,” the song The Rev had just finished, that helped lift any doubts about carrying on.
“He wouldn’t have wanted us to stop, and if it had been any one of us, it would be the same,” says bassist Christ. “Especially since he had written the song. ‘Fiction’ is one hundred percent his. You want people to hear how brilliant Jimmy really was, his songwriting as well as drumming. A lot of people know how great a drummer he was, but few know what a big part he played in the writing.”
From the first notes of the elegiac bells on the title track "Nightmare" to the epic ending track "Save Me" this album runs deep with passion that electrifies the auditory senses and draws you into Avenged Sevenfold's Nightmare.

Sometimes Stereos Eat Things!

So the other day my stereo decided that it was time to go and join the great sound waves in the sky. Which means that it died and in the process decided to eat two of my favorite CDs (Band of Heathens One Foot in the Ether and Avenged Sevenfold's City of Evil. What a bastard! So... I armed myself with a screwdriver and took that stubborn hunk of metal apart. I was able to rescue my CDs and then set about screwing the stereo back together so that I could take it to a place to be recycled. I ended up with five extra screws of which I have no idea where they go. For some reason I decided to turn it on for one last go. Guess what?! Damn thing has worked great ever since!!!!

Disturbed have sold 11 million albums and six million digital tracks worldwide, and have scored eight #1 singles at Active Rock radio over the course of their career. Disturbed are currently in the studio recording their new CD entitled Asylum, which will be released by Reprise Records in late summer.  The group's last studio album, the platinum self-produced Indestructible, debuted at #1 on Billboard's Top 200 album chart in June 2008 and remained in the Top 10 for five weeks.Indestructible is the band's third consecutive #1 album, following their platinum-sellers Believe (2002) and Ten Thousand Fists (2005), making Disturbed one of only six rock bands in history to score three consecutive #1 debuts with studio albums.  "We are truly looking forward to being part of a lineup this strong," says Disturbed's David Draiman.  "It's always good to tour with friends." In 2008, the song "Inside the Fire" was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Hard Rock Performance category for the 2009 award show and is the longest running #1 single in history at Active Rock Radio.
Southern California's Avenged Sevenfold recently finished tracking their highly anticipated fifth studio album, slated for release later this year.  The group, once an integral part of the independent underground rock scene, achieved worldwide success with their platinum 2005 breakthrough City Of Evil (Warner Bros. Records).  The album featured the wildly popular single "Bat Country."  The band quickly became known for their spectacular live shows and continues to sell out arenas worldwide.  They are the only band to have headlined the Vans Warped Tour and Ozzfest while simultaneously hitting #1 on MTV's "TRL."  In 2006, they won the award for fan-voted Best New Artist category for "Bat Country" at the MTV Video Music Awards.  In 2007, their self-titled Avenged Sevenfold album debuted at #1 on the Billboard Alternative, Hard and Rock Charts and #4 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart.  It spawned the singles "Almost Easy," "Afterlife" and "Scream," and has sold over a million units worldwide.  In 2008, the band captured their magnificent stage show on Live in the LBC & Diamonds in the Rough, a live CD/DVD that has since been certified platinum.  This tour marks Avenged Sevenfold's first tour since the passing of beloved friend and drummer Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan, and frontman M. Shadows shares, "After recently finishing up our new record we were not sure if we were going to continue touring.  We got a call from our friends at UPROAR and decided this would be the best way to introduce our fans to the new album.  We are excited to share the new music with you and our friends on tour."
Stone Sour's passionately pulsing second album, Come What(ever) May found the band firing on all cylinders and capturing the attention and the hearts of the rock 'n roll masses. The album was a massive success, already gold and approaching platinum status while the band is currently holed up in Nashville, Tennessee working on their much anticipated, as-yet-untitled third effort, due out on Roadrunner Records in summer 2010. Grammy-winning Come What(ever) May producerNick Raskulinecz is once again onboard as producer.  "Me and the boys are really looking forward to the UPROAR Festival this fall," comments the group's Corey Taylor. "Not only is it another chance to tour the great States, but it's also a chance for us to play the new material that we've been working on. It's going to be no holds barred every night, and we hope everyone is ready for it."
"With UPROAR, our goal is to bring fans a late summer celebration featuring awesome rock bands, lifestyle attractions and activities.  Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold and Stone Sour along with the rest of the bill deliver one of the best rock touring packages in recent times," says tour producer John Reese. "The album sales success of Disturbed has been unprecedented and they have the opportunity to be one of the only rock bands in history to have an album debut at #1 on theBillboard Top 200 four consecutive times. "In my opinion, Avenged Sevenfold with this new album are set to take their career to a massive place and Stone Sour's career is on a path to hugeness."
"The creative duo behind UPROARJohn Reese and CAA, are incredibly talented at pulling together a stellar lineup of great bands, combined with great activities, in a fun-filled summer environment, at a great price.  Our current partnership on Mayhem has been a huge success drawing more than 600,000 fans to our amphitheaters in 2008 and 2009, and given the great roster of bands on UPROAR, we anticipate another big hit with fans this summer," said Jason Garner, CEO of Concerts for Live Nation.
"At Rockstar Energy Drink we are committed to the music fan and with UPROAR we are ready to unleash one of the best rock packages in recent memory on North America," says Rockstar Energy Drink Marketing Director Mike Kelso.  "A plethora of great music and fan friendly surprises will be unveiled at the 2010 Rockstar Energy Drink UPROAR Festival."
"Jagermeister is once again thrilled to be working with John Reese and his team on UPROAR," comments Rick Zeiler, Director of Strategic Marketing for Jagermeister. "Our company takes great pride in working with the best in the business and UPROAR has all of the elements to be one of the best tours this year. We're also very excited to have Hellyeah headline the Jagermeister Mobile Stage."
The Rockstar Energy Drink UPROAR Festival will feature a full afternoon and night of activities, including a concourse midway filled with vendors and activities and a daily wrestling tournament featuring the Detroit-based Blue Collar Wrestling Alliance.  The Blue Collar Wrestling Alliance UPROAR lineup will feature eight of the finest, fastest rising wrestlers in the world who will put their skills to the ultimate test during the BCWA UPROAR Invitational.  The 36-event tournament will encompass 245 matches over seven weeks throughout North America.  The athlete that perseveres over injuries and adversity will be named King of the Tournament.
